Manchester – British Gas Championships, day 7 finals – Men’s 50m freestyle: The goaty beard gone, Adam Brown was not only a more handsome man this evening but a happier one after having shaved down for a 22.29 victory that booked his place at world titles in Shanghai this summer. The 22-year-old from Hatfield trains in Auburn with coach Brett Hawke and alongside Fred Bousquet, was a class apart. Brown didn’t much favour the idea of shaving for trials he has not fully rested for but after having missed the cut when he won the 100m, he wanted to leave Manchester for the States and NCAAs knowing that he had booked his ticket to China. The silver went to Owen Morgan, of Box Hill, in 22.67, the bronze to Simon Burnett, of Tuscon Ford and Windsor, in 22.79. Brown said: “I had to shave the beard off to get the quali-time. I didn’t really want to do it but now I’ve booked my place to Shanghai.” Paying plaudits to Hawke, Brown said: “I’m definitely swimming with a lots of confidence … I’m getting fit, getting aerobically fit so I can finish the 100m and I’ve got the speed in the 50.” He added: “I wanted to make the team really bad.”
He is now likely to return to Britain in June to reinforce his selection with qualification in the 100m. “It’s not going to take too much out of my schedule,” he noted. “I’ll be training long-course and looking forward to the summer. Once I get a bit of long-course training behind me and I’m fully shaved and fully rested, hopefully I’ll be going 21[s] by the summer. Tonight, he looked like a man capable of doing just that.
